This book was written in 1882, something the product description fails to make clear (I wonder why). It's antiquated and it is hard, with zero pedagogical consideration. The "reader" portion of the book contains excerpts in O.E. from the Bible, which, as the author states in his preface to the first edition, "have the great advantages of simplicity and familiarity of subject." I don't want to learn Anglo-Saxon to read the Bible. That's what Latin and Greek, among other ancient languages, are good for. I want to learn Anglo-Saxon to read epic histories and poetry. There's none of that in this book. It's chock full of other shortcomings, mainly related to its presentation. For example, the author tells you that he chooses to focus on the West Saxon dialect, but fails to tell you why that's the most important dialect of O.E. to learn. It's hard to tell what makes this "eighth edition" different from the first. Get something newer and better.Product details

This edition has progressively difficult practice sentences (but, alas, no key). They are fun to work through, and after a while, you just know if you're getting them right or not.

Good choice!
I have been reading Tolkien for some time which has lead me deeper and deeper into his roots. Many of these roots go down into the Anglo Saxon past. This volume has been helpful to me to begin to understand Old English with out taking a course.
Old-fashioned, as you'd expect from a 19th century academic, but comprehensive coverage of grammar with lots of examples. Occasionally confusing, where the example doesn't seem to illustrate what it's supposed to, but probably that's me missing some subtle point. It's hard work, but learning a new language is always hard, and Old English is intrinsically difficult by nature of its archaic structures. If you're willing to persevere, read and reread, I would recommend this book.
Useful as a reference book for anyone interested in the early use of our language.
It might be an old publication, but it is straight forward - it delivers OE grammar in an uncomplicated, easy to understand way. There is also a nice selection of practice readings in the end. The style of the textbook is very old - fashioned - it does not seek to entertain or engage the reader the way more modern textbooks do today, but it does deliver good info in a straightforward, no-nonsense way. It is a nice supplemental reference to keep on-hand.
